Addiction is easily misunderstood and misdiagnosed in older adults because symptoms

often mimic other disorders and problems related to older age. Additionally, age-related

physiological, psychological and social changes make older adults more vulnerable to the

detrimental effects of alcohol and illicit drugs. This workshop will identify the challenges of

treating addiction in these populations and effective approaches to treatment.

Learning Objectives:

1. To educate on the fastest growing population

requiring drug and alcohol treatment at

various levels of care.

2. To understand the treatment components

necessary to provide a well-rounded, integrated

approach for older adult care.

3. To address the clinical needs necessary to treat

the entire family system with particular focus

on care giving.
